Bachelor of Christian Education Program Objective

Christian Education program educates people to become bachelor level leaders of missional impact to extend the Kingdom of God.





Degree Requirements


Bachelor of Christian Education students are required to take 180 quarter hours with courses in Bible and Theology, general education, missional leadership, and Christian education.

Curricula Description
Biblical and Theological Studies
BIB 1410 Interpretation of Biblical Literature Introduction to the principles of biblical interpretation to better understand the Bible. Emphasis placed on the application of these principles.
BIB 1511 Pentateuch Exploration and investigation of the history and expositional study of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. Comparison between Hebrew Bible and literary works of Canaan, Egypt, Greece, and Mesopotamia.
BIB 1512 History of Israel Study of Israel’s history beginning with Samuel. Samuel, Saul, David, and Solomon will be examined in detail. Includes the study of Israel’s history beginning with the division of the kingdom under Rehoboam and Jeroboam through the Babylonian exile. Emphasis will also be placed on the historical and cultural background of this period.
BIB 1520 The Gospels Exploration and investigation of the historical and expositional study of the Synoptic gospels and John. Modern scholarly methods of research and analysis in dealing with the Gospel including problems of the relationships among author, material, and intended audience.
BIB 1521 Acts and Pauline Letters Exploration and investigation of the historical, cultural, socio-economical and exposition of Acts and the Pauline letters. Modern scholarly methods of research and analysis in dealing with the Acts and Pauline letters including problems of the relationships among author, material, and intended audience.
BIB 3510 Apocalyptic Literature Exploration and investigation of the history and exposition of the Major and Minor Prophets. Comparison between Hebrew Bible and literary works of Canaan, Egypt, Greece, and Mesopotamia.
BIB 3511 General Epistles and Apocalypse Exploration and investigation of the historical, cultural, socio-economical and exposition of the General Epistles and Apocalypse. Modern scholarly methods of research and analysis in dealing with the General Epistles and Apocalypse including problems of the relationships among author, material, and intended audience.
CTH 2510 Christian Theology I A systematic and topical study of the Christian doctrines of the Scriptures, God, Christ, Holy Spirit, and Creation.
CTH 2511 Christian Theology II A systematic and topical study of the Christian doctrines of humankind, sin, salvation, church, and future things.
CTH 4410 Apologetics A study of the representative approaches to Christian apologetics. Classical methodologies are studied are studied along with evaluation of contemporary approaches.
Christian Education - Standard courses are listed below but elective courses may be offered at any time as a substitute for the standard curriculum.
CED 2510 Theology and Philosophy of Christian Education An inductive study of the biblical and theological foundations for Christian education and a discovery of its objectives. The course highlights biblical educational models, Christ as the Master Teacher, and the teaching activities of the church.
CED 2511 Family Life and Ministry This course is designed to help students develop a heart to see all the generations in the church come together. The foundation of this course is to build a biblical case and purpose for the family. Examination of the family as a social unit with emphasis on parental interaction with a developing child. Consideration given to biblical and theological foundations, parenting, family structure, family worship and family stresses.
CED 2520 Worship and Music in the Church A study of leadership and administration of a music and worship ministry in the local church with an emphasis on worship leadership and worship issues.
CED 3510 Life Span Development in Christian Education A survey of developmental theories from birth through adulthood with application to Christian education.
CED 3511 Educational Psychology A survey of educational theories and practices. Students will complete an analysis of the theories from a Christian perspective and will integrate appropriate findings into a theory of Christian education.
CED 3312 Technology in Christian Education A survey, understanding, and ability to utilize various types of current technology relevant to education. Students will consider the ethical dimensions of the use of technology for Christian education. Includes an introduction to computer software applications including word processing, presentation software, spreadsheets, database software, and the internet.
CED 3413 Church Administration A functional survey of administrative approaches and principles with an emphasis on planning, organizing, and evaluating the educational work of the local church.
CED 4510 Teaching in Ministry Practical survey of the skills needed and resources available for teaching in children, youth, or adult ministries. Students will acquire teaching skills and practice those skills.
CED 4511 Issues in Christian Education A survey of the major issues confronting the educational ministry of the church today.
CED 4599 A & B Christian Education Internship (two quarters required) A supervised internship to enhance the skills for Christian education ministries. Students will complete 125 hours of supervised ministry.
CED 6540-9 Electives Special Christian education courses offered from time to time based on the decision of the faculty, the interest of students, the desire of the administration, or the relevance to life and Christian education in the present age. These courses may substitute for the standard Christian education curriculum as appropriate.
General Education
ENG 1490 English Old Testament Instruction in the use of the English language using the Old Testament as source material. As an option, students may complete the TOEFL Essentials and waive ENG 090 if they achieve a score of 6.5 or higher.
ENG 1495 English New Testament Instruction in the use of the English language using the New Testament as source material. As an option, students may complete the TOEFL Essentials and waive ENG 095 if they achieve a score of 6.5 or higher.
COM 1410 English Composition-I Basic writing skills for effective communication in Christian ministry. Emphasis will be given on the writing process, the principle of paragraph development, and the process of writing essays.
COM 2510 English Composition-II A survey of research and writing skills to write research papers in Christian education. Emphasis will be given to understanding and using the approved format for research papers, and learning and applying principles of research, and the writing process.
COM 2311 Speech Introduction to a variety of speech techniques and types with the intent of creating more self confidence and proficiency in any public speaking situation.
MTH 1310 Ministry Finance Basic accounting, management, and business administration in a church or nonprofit setting.
CCO 2411 Christian Counseling An introduction to counseling theories and practices with a specific integration with a Christian philosophy and approach to counseling. Equips the student to assess an issue, develop treatment plans, apply counseling skills, and assess the necessity for interventions.
HIS 2510 Church History This course will introduce students to the major events, figures, and themes of Christian history from the first century to the present. Students will learn about the development of doctrines, practices, and institutions of the church, as well as the challenges and opportunities that Christians faced in different historical and cultural contexts.
SSC 3410 Cross-Cultural Communication Introduction to the theory and skills needed in communicating effectively across cultures. Emphasis is placed on making theory practical through the use of simulations, case studies, and role plays.
SSC 4412 Interpersonal Skills This course is designed to increase individual effectiveness and strengthen abilities in interpersonal relationships. Topics include interpersonal communication effectiveness, personal perception, developing self-awareness, conflict management, effectively handling emotions, and developing and improving interpersonal skills.
HUM 2410 World Religions Investigation of the history of religions with primary attention given to Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Confucianism, their ancient world background, and basic concepts. Emphasis on conceptual issues and rituals, symbolism, identity, ecstatic experience, and revitalization movements.

HUM 3510 World Civilization A survey of the development of Eastern and Western civilization. This course studies the development of the Eastern and Western worlds and its institutions and ideas from ancient history to the present. The student will consider the positive and negative impact of Eastern and Western thinking and evaluate their own perspective.
HUM 4599 Senior Seminar Designed to be taken in the final year of a bachelor’s degree at Northpoint. Course features reflection on one’s college experience, practical preparation for the next steps beyond college, and integration of faith and theology with contemporary issues.
Missional Leadership
SPF 1191 Spiritual Formation Education at Northstar University is designed, in part, to equip leaders for Christian living and service. Since this is an academic institution, the development of the mind in order to think biblically is a priority. We are equally concerned with spiritual growth and the development of Christian character as well as living, loving, and serving in Christ-like fashion.
MIN 1410 Missional Formation A focused study on significant issues, books, movements, spiritual disciples, or persons related to the discipline of Spiritual Formation. An emphasis will be placed on one’s own spiritual formation and development. The development of a missional theology, philosophy, and passion for one’s personal life and ministry.
MIN 1411 Making Disciples This course examines and compares various disciple making methods including Biblical foundations, history, and contemporary applications of discipleship in and through the church.
CLS 2410 Christian Leadership A study and comparison of various leadership theories including servant leadership, leadership accountability, and reliance on God in one’s personal life and ministry.
MIS 2511 Perspectives on the World Christian Movement Perspectives helps believers from all walks of life see how they can get threaded into God’s story of redeeming people from every tribe, tongue, and nation to Himself. From Genesis to the prophets, Jesus Christ to the early church, and Constantine to today, students will see how God has been moving, how the global Church has responded, and what the greatest needs in world evangelization remain today.
MIN 2412 Christ and Culture A study of the Christian’s stance toward and within society, touching matters such as church and state, holiday observance, leisure and entertainment, political involvement, and engagement with secular entities.
MIN 2420 The Practice of Preaching A course in preaching theory and the process and practice of preaching. A preaching method will be learned and practiced in the class.
Special Topics
1000-4000 Special Topics Special courses offered from time to time based on the decision of the faculty, the interest of students, the desire of the administration, or the relevance to life and ministry in the present age. Special topic courses may substitute for the standard curriculum as appropriate.
